More than half of the golf clubs surveyed with a member who putts using the sidesaddle method (244) claim he is the club's best putter and/or the club's putting champ.

Buddy Bernhardt was the Indiana Putting Champion in 1997 and 1998 in the Dave Pelz / Compaq World Putting Championship. He qualified with 30 putts in the amateur division... Bettering the top professional qualifier by 3 putts!

DAVE PELZ'S ANALYSIS:
Bernhardt's setup allows him to see with "binocular vision," the way you're used to seeing everything else, so it sharpens his depth perception. I'm sure he also finds it easy to keep his putter on line using his "vertical-stroke" motion.

25 years ago I got a cold in my back. The result was a case of the yips so bad that I almost had to give up the game. When the cold was gone, the yips were still there. I tried everything. Nothing worked. Then a pro on long Island, Jim Albus, who I knew from his days at Lauterette on Staten Island, suggested side-saddle as a last resort. I practiced it for about two weeks and then my wife and I went on a golf trip that included Hilton Head. It was the first time I every used the pure side-saddle method

The first day at Harbour Town I played the first 9 holes in a rain storm. My wife watched from the cart. I one putt the first 7 greens and no putt was under 10 feet. I shot a 34 on the front nine and a 38 on the back. A total of 24 putts for the 18 holes. I thought I had found the "holy grail" of golf. My yips were gone and I could play the game again.

I am one of the best long putters here at Boca West because after 25 years my distance control is amazing.

I literally can't make a 3" putt that matters if putting normally. In fact, putting normally I can't even take the putterhead back from the ball if the putt is important. Same problem that made Hogan give up the game.

Some golfers don't want to watch me putt side saddle and say it bothers them. Some immediately question the legality. But after a round when I end the day with 25 or 26 putts, I see them on the side of the green experimenting with the technique and saying "maybe I should try that". Especially the ladies. As part of the TV commercial showing on the Golf Channel and Fox Sports, A test was held to evaluate the difference between conventional putting and sidesaddle.

The participants were two average golfers and...

...a scratch player. They were asked to putt 10 white balls with their regular putter using the conventional method. 5 from 30 feet and 5 from 15 feet. Then they hit 10 more putts from the same distances with yellow balls using the sidesaddle method. Remember, these golfers had never tried such a radical change in their putting technique before this experiment. They were only given a brief lesson in the proper setup. Your results will be even better with practice.
